BBC's The Warship: Tour of Duty brings viewers to tears

Viewers were deeply saddened after tragic events lead to the death of a 23-year-old Navy sailor.

In an incredibly moving episode of The Warship, viewers were left in tears as the ship's captain announced the devastating news of a medical emergency and the unfortunate outcome. Despite the valiant efforts of the medical team on board HMS Queen Elizabeth, who were called upon to assist with the situation, Engineer Harrison was unable to be saved.

Captain Ian Feasey said "We were required overnight to send a medical team to HMS kent to assist with an emerging casualty situation. This casualty was an apparent suicide attempt, the individual concerned was brought across to Queen Elizabeth for urgent assistance but despite the very best efforts of all the medical team here, they were unable to save this young man's life."

Emergency Nurse Specialist CPO Andy Sutherland, who was part of the medical team, spoke of the heart-wrenching moment in an interview, fighting back tears as he shared, "We did everything we could and then we looked after him. We held his hand". The episode then showed the touching ceremony of Engineer Harrison's repatriation, with both HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Kent showing their respects as he was flown away by an RAF helicopter.

One viewer said, "I was crying my eyes out".

The Royal Navy confirmed Daniel Harrison, an engineering technician, died on July 10 while serving on HMS Kent.

Daniel Harrison joined the Royal Navy in 2016 after working at Washington Metalworks and served on several ships, including HMS Somerset, HMS Collingwood, and HMS Montrose, visiting countries like Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark. He was an avid adventurer and enjoyed rock climbing, mountaineering, skiing, and home renovation. He had a passion for life and an adventurous spirit and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and shipmates.

The loss of Daniel is a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve in the armed forces. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family, friends, and shipmates, who are grieving this immense loss. If you or someone you know needs help, please do not hesitate to reach out and speak to someone.
